Town held at home but extend lead at top

DESPITE being held to a draw by Croesyceiliog at home last Saturday, Monmouth Town stretched their lead at the top of Welsh League division two to 18 points.
Jacob Guy got the runaway leaders’ goal, however, that was cancelled out by a Jordan Jones strike which moved third-placed Croesy to within one point of Newport YMCA, who did not have a game at the weekend.
A solitary Thomas Edwards goal gave Tata Steel a 1-0 victory over Bettws for a tenth win of the campaign and one which sees them go fourth in the table on 30 points.
At the foot of the table, Newcastle Emlyn came out on top in the meeting between the sides occupying the bottom two places.
Robbie Jenkins and Huw Jones gave the home side just their fourth win this season and a three-point cushion over the Merthyr borough club.
Third-from-bottom Aberbargoed Buds also picked up a vital victory in their bid to avoid the drop despite missing two second-half penalties against Caerau.
All the goals in the Buds’ 2-1 win came in the first-half at the Recreation Ground, the hosts scoring through Andrew Hughes and Wayne Antoniazzi with the first of three spot kicks awarded to the Rhymney Valley side in the game.
There was an emphatic 4-0 mauling for Ely Rangers at the hands of Garden Village with Luke Thomas, Ashley Richards, Liam Chambers and Jack Shannan all on target after the break.
Elsewhere, Dinas Powys edged out Caldicot Town 1-0 while the game between Penrhiwceiber and Ammanford was lost to the cold weather.
