Struggling Treharris stun high-flying YMCA

TREHARRIS Athletic Western pulled off the biggest shock of the weekend in Welsh League division two, coming out on top in a five-goal thriller against second-placed Newport YMCA.
And not only did the three points work wonders for Joey Clyne’s men in their fight for survival, but runaway leaders Monmouth Town, whose match at Ely Rangers was postponed, would have been delighted to see their closest challengers stumble.
YMCA wasted the chance to chip away at Monmouth’s 18-point lead as Kevin Bounds, Ian Batten and Adam Alexander got the goals for Treharris, who despite the win stay bottom of the division on goal difference. Lee O’Connor and Olly Beckett scored for Newport.
The side immediately above them, Newcastle Emlyn, could count themselves unlucky not to come away with anything from their encounter at Ammanford.
Brothers Matthew and Rhys Fisher put the Rice Roaders 2-0 up early on only for the visitors to level soon after the break. Owen James put Ammanford back ahead but Emlyn levelled late on.
However, that man James to settle the issue in the 85th minute following a brilliant pass from Geraint Rees to find him. Chris Ferrier and Alex Squire (2) got Emlyn’s goals.
In Saturday’s other fixtures, goals from Mitchell Slape and Luke Blakebrough gave Caldicot Town an impressive win at Caerau while Aberbargoed Buds eased their relegation fears with a 3-1 triumph at fellow strugglers Bettws.
The games between Caerleon and Tata Steel and Dinas Powys and Garden Village both finished goalless.
