Sixth place for Welsh champ in Spain

HAVERFORDWEST’S Welsh champion Becky Harries made a promising start to the year by finishing in a tie for sixth at the Spanish Ladies Amateur Strokeplay Championship.
The host nation’s South Korean-born Ha Rang Lee won the tournament on -4 as Spanish golfers completed a clean sweep of the first three places in Alicante.
Andrea Jonama Rovira was runner-up on -2 and Clara Baena Sanchez came third one shot further back.
Harries, third after day one, was the leading British woman with rounds of 70, 74 and 75 giving her a final score of +3, seven strokes adrift of the winner.
Conwy’s Junior Solheim Cup star Amy Boulden had to settle for joint 10th following rounds of 76, 69 and 79 while the other Welsh competitors, Chloe Williams and Katherine O’Connor, were never really in the running after both carded 79 in the opening round.
The next big women’s event is the Australian Amateur Championship which starts on January 17 at Woodlands and Huntingdale golf clubs in Melbourne.
