The first round of the Plate competition kicked off yesterday with sides from Divisions Two and Three battling it out for a place in the second round.
Ystrad Rhondda were far too strong for the visiting Rhiwbina in the Swalec Plate, with the hosts picking up a convincing 78-6 victory.
Ystrad helped themselves to twelve tries including a hat trick for outside half Rhys Truelove, with centre Andrew Hutchins and wing Daniel John both bagging a brace.
Fleur de Lys comfortably overcame Caerphilly 26-5 at Virginia Park.
Fleur notched up all of their points in the opening half through touchdowns from scrum half Andrew John, flanker Lee Jones, hooker Mark Davies and full back Jonny Morris. The Cheesemen meanwhile were restricted to a solitary second half try from wing Nigel Jones.
Aberavon Quins are also safely through to the second round after easing to a 24-3 home success over Bryncoch.
Quins touched down for four tries through a Matthew Potsuma double, with Stuart Deighton and Steve Colarusso also going over.
Bala picked up a narrow 8-0 home victory over rivals Pwllheli with the hosts scoring the only try through flanker Iwan Morris, and fly half Rhydian Jones also slotting a penalty.
Meanwhile, Heol Y Cyw bagged a 27-3 triumph at Pencoed.
The Cockerels were in control throughout as they dominated both territory and possession to cross the hosts’ line four times through Scott Hancocks, Darren Oram, Ricky Somers and Adam O’Driscoll. Hancocks also added two conversions and Gareth Howe slotted a penalty.
In reply, the hosts could only muster a solitary Mark Davies penalty.
Pill Harriers notched up a 49-22 victory over Brynmawr in a highly entertaining encounter.
With both sides running the ball at every opportunity, it was the Harriers that proved too strong as they ran in eight tries including a David Jefferson double, with Duane Bailey, Rhys Lloyd, Rhys Hubbard, Rhys Yendell, Ross Palmer and Kris Chorley also touching down. Yendell also landed a penalty and three conversions.
Elsewhere, Two East’s Ynysybwl put Risca to the sword to advance with a 41-7 victory at the Recreation Ground and Dunvant ground out a 20-18 home win over Gorseinon, with centre Greg Davies’ five penalties proving to be the difference.
