Llanishen swoop to summit with five star show

Llanishen swooped to the summit of Division Three South East with a try bonus 34-3 home success over Pentyrch.
The highfliers helped themslevs to five tries through Tom Austin, Ben Howie, Sean Dunne and a double from Mike Dacey. Gareth Jones landed a penalty and two conversions with Phil Thomas also slotting a conversion.
Rhiwbina seemed to have held out against Gwernyfed’s predictable but well-executed rolling mauls, but a last gasp try by George Barden from yes, you’ve guessed it, a rolling maul snatched victory, 22-19, to give the home team their sixth win.

Rhwbina took an early lead through a Richard Saltmarsh penalty, before Steve Harley went over in the corner for the first of Gwernyfed’s tries.

A superb take and drive against the head saw Dave Gilbert snipe down the blind side to put winger Chris Fido over in the corner, superbly converted by Saltmarsh.  Saltmarsh kicked his second penalty to give the Squirrels a 13-8 half time lead.

Ten minutes into the second half, a 5 metre line out resulted in a rolling maul try for Steve Harley converted by Dodd, and Gwernyfed were back in the lead. Persistent infringements at the breakdown by the home team lead to two further well-taken penalties by Saltmarsh, giving the Squirrels a 19-15 lead into the last, frenetic 10 minutes.
Time and again, Rhwbina began to foil the Gwernyfed rolling mauls and break upfield, before losing the last lineout and the game.

Meanwhile, Nelson lost the grip on the top with the former leaders only managing a 21-21 draw at home against St Peters.
Elsewhere, Penarth are still desperately searching for their first win after suffering their eleventh loss, going down 25-10 at Brecon.
Finally, Tonyrefail comfortably dispatched Aberdare 45-6 and Fairwater bagged their sixth victory with a 14-0 home triumph over Dowlais.
