Seaweeds pull off first round cup upset

The first round of the Swalec Bowl kicked off this weekend with clubs from Divisions Four to Seven competing to emulate the success of last year’s Champions Senghenydd and get a chance to play at the Millennium Stadium.
Division Five's Porthcawl pulled off a surprise in the first round of the Swalec Bowl, bridging the gap to record an emphatic 50-10 home victory over Division Four’s Birchgrove.
The Seaweeds helped themselves to seven tries at South Road with Sion Dunkley, Nick Jones, Ollie Jones, Nick Nutman, Sean Simmonds, Dai James and Lloyd Long all touching down.
Tycroes’ exceptional early form continues as the Division Five South West pacemakers put the Five West strugglers Pontyates to the sword.
The Ammanford outfit crossed the Pontyates line twelve times including a hat-trick for Mike Hopkins, braces for Gareth Jones, Jonathan Tancock, Simon Cooper and Tristan Morgan, with Sean Jones also going over. Player coach Dean Bromham converted seven.
In an all-Division Five South West clash, Trebanos overcame Pyle 28-18. Matthew Edwards, Rhodri Williams and Ceri Roberts all crossed for Banws. Edwards racked up a further 13 points with the boot through two conversions and three penalties.
The gap in class proved to be too much for Division Six’s Pantyffynon when they travelled to Division Four outfit Furnace United, with the hosts running out 103-0 winners.
Furnace crossed the visitors’ line on 17 occasions including four for outside half Luke Jenkins, a hat-trick for wing Tom Barnes and braces for hooker Mark Lloyd and Rob Jones.
Division Two North’s Dolgellau made the long trip to Six Central’s Llandrindod Wells and were rewarded with a 32-8 victory.
The visitors ran in four tries through Ian Morris, Owain Thomas, Dylan Llewellyn and Gary Connor. Tom Roberts landed three conversions and two penalties.
Meanwhile, Abercarn secured their place in the second round draw with a 16-0 home success over Nantymoel. The hosts’ hero was Ryan Hodges, who crossed for a try on his hundredth appearance for the club.
Division Four East’s Talywain racked up the biggest victory of the day running out 125-8 winners over the University of Newport.
Cefn Cribbwr entertained fellow Five South Central outfit Cwmgwrach and stormed to a 64-0 win.
Cefn helped themselves to eleven tries including hat tricks for Gareth Lewis and Ashley Harris, with Richard Brock bagging a brace.
In an all-North Wales clash, Harlech triumphed 24-10 at Bangor. The visitors went over for four tries through a Kai Edwards double, with Sion Rees and Twion Llywood bagging one try apiece.
