Beddau seal shock win for Bargoed to move top


Beddau produced a shock result in Division One East, inflicting highfliers Newbridge’s first defeat so far with a 13-8 win at Mount Pleasant Park.
The hosts collected all of their points before the interval through a Carl Thomas touchdown, with Steve Robinson slotting two penalties and a conversion.
The highfliers struggled to assert their authority on the match but did manage to salvage a losing bonus point after the breakthrough of an Andrew Coupe try and a Bevan Howells penalty.
Bargoed seized the initiative with both hands to take full advantage of their rivals’ slip-up, picking up a try bonus 34-24 victory over Tredegar at Bargoed Park to leap to the summit.
The new pacemakers helped themselves to six tries with Jordan Purcell and Alex Herbert bagging a brace apiece, while Wayne Lewis Protheroe and Darren Humphreys also crossed. Josh Prosser added two conversions.
New boys Tredegar failed to fade away though and put up a fine fight through two Matt McGiven touchdowns, with Dominic Pullen also going over, while Scoot Amber slotted all three conversions as well as a penalty.
New boys Mountain Ash notched up their third victory with a try bonus 32-23 home win over Merthyr at Parc Dyffryn Pennar.
The Old Firm bagged four tries through Luke Young, John Manuel, Josh Lewis and Carig Evans, with Lewis also firing home three conversions a penalty and a drop goal.
The Ironmen were restricted to just two touchdowns from Andrew Murphy and Aaron Howard, while Neil Burnett added both conversions and three penalties.
Rumney notched up a narrow local derby win with a 27-23 victory over Glamorgan Wanderers at the Memorial Ground.
The visitors bagged three tries through Danny Clarke, Gareth Stoppani and Soloman Matthews, with Clarke also amassing 12 points with the boot.
The Wanderers continue to struggle after being relegated but did manage to pick up a losing bonus point thanks to touchdowns by Dan Lovell, Owen Marshall and Joe Xiberras, while Gareth Cull slotted a penalty and replacement Sean Cochlin landed a penalty and a conversion.
Meanwhile, Ebbw Vale clinched the biggest win of the day with a 57-3 home success over Blackwood.
The Steelmen helped themselves to nine tries with Charlie Simpson, Wes Cunliffe and Tom Ashmead crossing twice, while Nick Coughlin and David Jones also went over, with a penalty try also adding to their tally. Dorian Jones knocked over five conversions with replacement Dan Haymond adding another.
Elsewhere, Gilfach Goch picked up their fifth win with a 15-0 scrappy victory over Treorchy at the Welfare Park.
Goch amassed all the match’s points in the first half through a touchdown from debutant Dan Roberts, a penalty try that Ryan Evans converted and a Gareth Walters penalty.
