It was a highly impressive result for Wales, up against many
of the best players in Europe. Teams were entered from all the larger
countries, with Spain winning both the individual and team titles in the ladies’
category.
The girls finished above fourth-place England, while Germany
took second. Becky Harries, from Haverfordwest, and Llandudno/Maesddu’s Amy
Boulden completing the Welsh line-up for the prestigious tournament.
Chloe Williams in her GB kit at the Australian Youth Olympics Festival.
Williams was in consistent top form until a 76 in the last
round saw her slip back, with Patricia Sanz Barrio winning by seven clear points
at the end of the four rounds. Denmark’s Nicole Larsen was in third, three
points behind the Welsh girl, and England’s Georgia Hall, ranked fourth best
amateur in the world, a further shot back. Boulden and Harries were joint 17th.
“This was an outstanding result for the Wales ladies team,”
said Golf Union of Wales director of performance Ben Waterhouse. “Chloe has
built on her early season form at the Australian Youth Olympics Festival, where
she won team gold and individual bronze.
“We would like to congratulate the whole team, but obviously
Chloe in particular. Although she is still young enough to be in the Wales girls’
team, this shows she is ready to make her mark at senior level as Becky and Amy
have already done.
“The Wales men’s team found things a little harder, but
congratulations to Jason Shufflebotham who finished a creditable 15th against
many of the best amateurs in Europe.”
England won the men's event with Shufflebotham, Ben
Westgate, Jonathan Bale and Will Jones finishing 15th in the windy and
difficult conditions.
The next major event for Welsh golf is hosting the Under 16
Quadrangular at Southerndown, against teams from Ireland, Scotland and Holland.
