The Shropshire & Herefordshire first-team regular hit a
par 73 in round one and a one over 74 in a rain-interrupted round two to leave
him on 147, two shots behind joint leaders Harry Casey of England and Ireland’s
Richard O’Donovan.
As a result, Jones is seeded sixth for the match play and
will face Oliver Carr in the last 32. He has Irishman Reeve Whitson in his
quarter of the draw, while O’Donovan and European No1 Adrien Saddier are also
in the bottom half of the draw alongside him.
It was not such good news for Wales’ other entrants, as
Henry James and Jason Shufflebotham failed to make it. Kidderminster’s
James scored a gross 158, leaving him tied for 74th with seven other
golfers. Shufflebotham (Prestatyn) had a tournament to forget, as his rounds of
89 and 81 left him on 170, with only France’s Hugo Rouillon and Sebastian
Schwind of Germany scoring higher.
The three golfers combined their scores to represent Wales
in the Nations Cup event running alongside the singles play, with their gross
score of 305 leaving them 13th out of 23 teams.
Their score was only 12 behind the winners, an Ireland A
side containing O’Donovan, Whitson and Chris Selfridge, while they hit the same
total as France B and Ireland B.
The match play event begins today (March 1), with Jones looking
to continue flying the Welsh flag on St David’s Day and march in to the last 16.
