Seagulls lose Meechan to Telford job

Striker Alex Meechan has left resurgent Colwyn Bay to take up the vacant assistant manager role at Conference Premier strugglers AFC Telford.

The 32-year-old, who previously played 31 times over two years at Telford, had recently been a part of the upturn in fortunes under new player/manager Frank Sinclair. But he has opted to pursue a road in to coaching with his previous employers.

He will form part of an interim management team of himself, John Psaras, Ryan Young and Phil Trainer following caretaker boss Graham Hyde quitting the club after Saturday’s (March 9) home defeat to Macclesfield.

He had only joined the north Walian club in January.

Sinclair said: "I am very sorry to lose Meeks because he has been great in the dressing room for us and has helped turn things round on and off the pitch. We will miss him, but although he is sorry to be going he feels it is too good an opportunity to turn down and we wish him luck.

“I have a couple of players in mind and hopefully we can get someone in time for Saturday.”

Meechan helped Telford win promotion to the Conference Premier during his spell at the club. Bay and Telford are just two of 16 teams he has represented during his career, including loan spells, amassing more than 400 appearances along the way.

Telford Chairman, Lee Carter, said: “Alex, like a lot of former players, is hurting like mad about our current predicament and was on the phone to [Psaras] to offer his help.

“We’d like to thank the Colwyn Bay chairman for allowing Alex to come down and assist. Alex is a great character who is itching to get in and amongst the dressing room.”
