Swalec One East and West Round Up

RGC 1404 made sure they took full advantage of title rivals Ystrad Rhondda’s league absence, as they returned to the One East summit with a 28-13 home win over Treorchy.

With the Arctic conditions in the north of the country, it was a monumental effort by all involved at RGC to get the game on as snow continued to fall until midday, but their efforts were rewarded by the players’ performance on the pitch.

The North Walian development side raced into a 20-3 half time lead, as they used the strong wind to keep the Zebras pinned into their own half. Carwyn ap Myrddin, Mike Jones and Tom Parry all crossed for the highfliers.

After the break, things went from bad to worse for the visiting team as they were reduced to 13 men for two straight reds that saw Gareth Fear and Shaun Green both sent for early baths.

RGC crossed for the crucial bonus point try through Rhodri Evans, but Treorchy had the last say as they crossed twice at the death through Jamie Summers and Trystan Lazarus.

In the only other match in the division to get the go ahead, Gilfach Goch compounded Tredegar’s relegation doom with a 58-0 thumping. Gowch helped themselves to eight tries with Adam Powell and Ian Davies both claiming braces, while Adam Priday, Nathan Walters, Adam Fry and Scott Purnell also crossed.

The snow and rain also put paid to a number of fixtures in the west, with One West leaders Tondu’s victory at Llangennech only one of two matches that survived.

The Waterwheelers maintained momentum at the summit with a 29-6 success, as the visitors crossed five times through Kristian Jenkins, Liam Davies, Matthew Vaughan, Gavin Eagle and David Griggs.

The victory sees Tondu go 17 points clear at the top, but second place Cwmllynfell do have four matches in hand over the trailblazers.

At the other end of the table, Ammanford bagged up their seventh win of the season as they saw off Skewen 35-29 in a nine try thriller.

Centre Chris Moore was at the double for the Carmarthenshire side, while Emyr Price, Trystan Morgan and Gary Stephens also went over.

In the only One North match to survive the big freeze, Pwllheli maintained their challenge at the summit as they saw off Bethesda 9-6, to close to within one point of leaders Nant Conwy.
