Championship Midweek Round Up

Cardiff Met continued their fine form in the Championship as they comfortably dispatched lowly Pontypool 44-17 at Cyncoed.
The Students ran in five tries in total, while fly half Matt O’Brien notched up 19 points with a nearly flawless display with the boot. The hosts racked up three tries before the break through wing James Beal, Charlie Stevenson and Gary Woods to lead 27-5 at the interval, before second row Nick Leach bagged a second half double to seal the win.
Pooler, who have just one win to their name all season, did play some nice rugby at times, and were rewarded with three tries of their own through Clayton Gullis, Ryan Owen and Trevor James.
Meanwhile, Tata Steel leapt to fourth in the table with a 20-10 victory at basement boys Whitland but were made to work by the Borderers.
On a frosty night in West Wales, there was nothing to separate the sides at the break with Scott Newton knocking over a first half penalty, only to be cancelled out by Gareth Walters' effort for Tata.
The Port Talbot side eventually ground down their hosts with two tries from flanker Sion Croker, while Walters stroked over seven more points.
Whitland’s only try of the match came courtesy of second row Dave Emsworth, with Newton slotting the extras.
Elsewhere, Beddau and Narberth played out an eight try thriller at Mount Pleasant Park with the Green and Golds coming out on top, 41-22.
The Otters bagged all of their points before the break as they led 22-20 at the interval with touchdowns from Giles Vaughan, Will Lewis and Johnny Morgan, while James Russell kicked seven points. But that was as good as it got for the Pembrokeshire side.
Andy Humberstone, making his debut for the Green and Golds, notched up a 16 point haul, while prop Liam Bodman crossed twice. The hosts ran in three more tries through centre Adam Williams, Rob Downes and Joe Popple. The win propels Beddau two places up the table into eighth.
The other scheduled fixture between Bargoed and Glamorgan Wanderers fell victim to the frost. On Friday night, there are three more Championship matches pencilled in with Blackwood entertaining Newbridge, Llanharan travelling to Bridgend Athletic (note: game to be played at SW Police ground) and finally, Ebbw Vale looking to extend their advantage at the summit when they host Bonymaen.
