Oswestry’s Will Jones
fell to the eventual champion Reeve Whitson at the Spanish
Amateur International Championship in La Manga over the weekend.
The European No123, runner up at last year’s Welsh Open
Youths Championship at Bull Bay, had despatched England’s Oliver Carr two and
one at the last 32 stage, but in Whitson met a young golfer at the top of his
game in the last 16, going down five and four.
The 23-year-old Mourne golfer could play himself in to Great
Britain & Ireland’s Walker Cup team if he keeps this form up. He bettered
Englishman Jamie Rutherford three and one in the quarter-finals and demolished European No1
Adrien Saddier five and four in the semis to set up a final clash with another
Englishman, Neil Raymond.
Whitson controlled the match from the 13th hole,
and eventually ran out a four and three winner after twice levelling when Raymond
edged ahead on the fourth and ninth holes.
Two other Welshman, Henry James and Jason Shufflebotham,
failed to qualify for the final rounds.
