DESPITE being outscored five tries to three, Tondu produced
one of their best performances of the season as they defeated Carmarthen
Athletic 30-29 away from home.
The visitors, two places off the foot of the Division One West table,
fought back from a 20-12 half-time deficit with Paul Smithson grabbing a try,
three conversions and three penalties.
In fact, Tondu were the dominant side in the first 40
minutes as they bossed a Carmarthen team that had seven changes to the one that
beat UWIC a week before.
The hosts were punished for countless handling errors and
ultimately a few missed conversions as Mike Sauro could only added the extras
to two of the scores from himself, Viv Jenkins, Rhys Lewis, Rhys Lane and
Gareth Bennett.
Matthew Davies and Matthew Phillips crossed for Tondu as they
held on after the break to record a superb away victory at the side guaranteed
of finishing the season in third.
Waunarlwydd bagged a bonus point in their 28-23 win at UWIC
although despite losing the hosts also picked up two points.
It was the Students who held a narrow 15-13 lead going into
the second-half in a game that swung back and fore throughout.
Pierre Tucker,
Tom Bax and Leyton Bellamore scored tries for UWIC before the break while Ben
James and Nathan Hart replied and Leigh Evans kicked a penalty for the
visitors.
Waunarlwydd’s Daniel Fox and Evans crossed the whitewash
after the interval and although Owen Jenkins replied in kind for UWIC the home
side couldn’t find a way back to claim victory.
