Bargoed kept their slim chances of clinching the Division One East crown alive with an emphatic 70-22 home victory over Merthyr.
The highfliers completely outclassed their visitors, helping themselves to ten tries in all through Andrew McLoughlan, Gareth Dare, Luke Smalley, Josh Prosser, John Lavender, and Matthew Hurley, as well as the impressive Lewis Protheroe, who ran in four. Hurley also had a fine day with the boot adding two penalties and seven conversions.
The Ironmen’s solitary touchdown came through Darryl Jenkins, while Stephen Lang amassed 17 points with the boot.
The victory puts Bargoed three points behind Ebbw Vale at the top, but the Steelmen have two games in hand over their title rivals.
Meanwhile, Gilfach Goch ensured themselves fourth spot with a try bonus 26-14 win over Blackwood at Welfare Park.
Gil bounced back from their loss at Newbridge last week and put in a classy display to see off a dogged Blackwood, running in four tries through Nathan Walters, Steve Baker, Ryan Evans and Scott Burnell, while Ian Davies added three conversions.
The visitors crossed twice through Anthony John and Chris Penny meanwhile.
In the battle at the bottom, Glamorgan Wanderers dished out an 85-24 thrashing of Tredegar.
The Wanderers ran in twelve tries including a hat-trick for exciting centre Joe Xiberras and a double from Elliot Jones, while Charley Johnson, Laurent Quick, Dan Lovell, Dan Richards, Alex Luff, Karl Kimber and Rhys Griffiths also crossed. Gareth Cull meanwhile nearly had a perfect day with the boot in landing a penalty and eleven of the twelve conversions.
Even though Tredegar were on the wrong side of a thumping, they still came away with a try bonus point thanks to touchdowns from centre Matthew McGovern, Chris Jenkins, Greg Jenkins and Gavin Elryd.
Elsewhere, Beddau saw off Rumney 29-21 at Mount Pleasant Park.
The hosts, who now look certain of bagging fifth place in the league, ran in four touchdowns through Liam Bodman, Rhys Watkins, Cameron Pimlow and Ieaun Coombes, while Steve Robinson slotted three conversions and a penalty.
Rumney fell just short of grabbing a losing bonus point despite a much improved second half display, crossing for three tries in all through Mike Kelly, Christian Edwards and Danny Clarke, with the latter also adding the extras to all three.
