BRO Ffestiniog cemented third place in Division One North as
they came from behind with a try three minutes from time to see off Mold 14-12.
No 8 Dewi James struck late on to draw the scores level and
give Huw James the easiest of conversions from in front of the posts to snatch
the win.
The sides couldn’t be separated in the first-half and they
went into the interval without a single point behind scored.
However, the hosts seized the initiative when winger Lee
Aspden scampered over and James converted. But Mold were back in it when the
impressive Ollie Hughes, making his first-team debut, touched down and Luke
Jones added the extras.
With the game having entered the last 10 minutes both sides knew
it was there for the taking and it looked like the visitors had won when Jones
launched an attack with a chip and chase and Richard Hopkins out-sprinted the
Bro defence to score.
Jones couldn’t make the conversion from wide out but, with
Mold seemingly cruising to the final whistle with victory in sight, disaster struck
and a missed tackle opened the smallest of gaps for No 8 James to canter in
under the sticks.
“I think the continued learning for us was the intensity we
brought from the off and what pressure we could put the opposition under as a
consequence – that’s the real thing that we’ll take out of today’s match and
where we need to be,” said Mold head coach Les Byrne.
In the only other game in One North on Saturday, Bethesda
earned their 12th win of the season with a 25-8 triumph over
Llangefni.
Steven Roberts (2) and Graham Davies scored Bethesda’s tries
with Gareth Wyn Roberts converting two and kicking two penalties. Llangefni’s only
try came through centre Tomos Williams.
