Tata Steel narrow gap on leaders Narberth

Tata Steel narrowed the gap on leaders Narberth at the top of Division One West with a 36-23 clinical triumph over UWIC at Cyncoed.
The Saints, who were trailing at the break, put in a dominant second half performance as they put down a marker for their title credentials. The visitors crossed five times through a penalty try, Gareth Edwards, Sion Crocker and a Simon Evans double, while outside half Diggy Bird controlled the match well and was on target with four conversions and a penalty.
The students started well but couldn’t maintain their standards after the interval, with all their scores coming in the first half through Dan Bibby and Pierre Tucker touchdowns, and 14 points from the boot of Mark Cooke.
The win sees Tata Steel remain five points behind pacemakers Narberth but crucially have a game in hand, with the Saints welcoming UWIC to their Margam base on April 11.
Leaders Narberth had to dig deep to clinch a narrow 33-30 victory over West Wales rivals Whitland as the battle for the title heats up.
The Borderers looked a shoe in for victory at the break, leading 27-13 through tries by prop Gareth Lloyd, wing Dafydd Williams and hooker Marc Jones, while outside half Scott Newton added the extras to all three and slotted two penalties.
The Otters though came out firing on all cylinders and, inspired by the boot of fly half Stuart Morris, they clawed their way back, touching down for three tries in all through Steffan Phillips, Dan Smith and captain Steve Martin, while Morris notched up 18 points through four penalties and three conversions.
Meanwhile, Caramrthen Atheltic moved up to third thanks to a Mike Sauro inspired 21-6 success at Bonymaen.
The full back bagged 16 of his side's points through a try, two conversions and three penalties, with Luke Owens also touching down for the visitors, while Bony were restricted to just two first half penalties from Richard Cunniffe.
Llanharan inflicted Tondu’s thirteenth defeat of the season with a 35-9 success at the Dairyfield.
The Dairymen were trailing 6-0 at the interval through two Paul Smithson penalties, but it could have been more for the Waterwheelers as they failed to capitalise when the hosts were reduced to 14 when Tom Piper was sinbinned.
After the break, the Dairymen were on top and executed their opportunities well, wrapping up a try bonus point thanks to touchdowns from hooker Nathan Huish, second row Bill Carey and a brace from captain Dai Atkins, while Chris Williams fired home three penalties and two conversions.
Bridgend Athletic came out on top 44-27 in a try fest against Waunarlwydd at Newbridge Fields.
Athletic helped themselves to six tries through braces from Jonathan Phillips and Rhys Ward-Jones, with James Owens and Simon Mustoe also crossing the whitewash. Steven Lewis landed four conversions and two penalties.
Waun didn't come away empty-handed, however, running in four tries of their own to secure a try bonus point with touchdowns from Guy Jones, Tom Gravelle, Ed Bennet and Lee Evans, while outside half Jonny Davies added two conversions and a penalty.
Elsewhere, Llangennech defeated Ammanford 25-16 in the Carmarthenshire derby.
Llangenench, who sit fourth, crossed four times through Ellis Phillips, Lee Davies and a Michael Williams double.
Ammanford’s only try of the match came through a penalty try, while Carwyn Richards added a conversion and three penalties.
The match was delayed for half hour due to a serious clash of heads between Garry Stephens and Ricky Williams.
