The seemingly unstoppable Ebbw Vale machine blew Rumney away with a 48-7 triumph at Riverside Park, as the Steelmen remain on course to secure back to back Division One East titles.
The Steelmen were dominant
throughout, running in seven tries in all through Cameron Reagan, Ronnie Kynes,
Dai Jones, Josh Powell, Wes Cunliffe and a double from Charlie Simpson. Outside
half Dorian Jones added two conversions and a penalty, while replacement Dan
Haymond landed three conversions.
The hosts could only manage a
consolation score which came through Paul King, with Lewis Andrews adding the
extras.
The win sees the Steelmen go eight points
clear at the summit and now turn their attentions to a Swalec Cup semi-final
against Cross Keys next weekend.
Highflying Bargoed scraped past
Blackwood 15-14 at Glan Yr Afon to keep their slim title hopes alive by the
skin of their teeth.
The visitors outscored their
rivals two tries to one with touchdowns from fullback Andrew McLachlan and
flanker Gareth Davies, while Josh Prosser fired home a penalty and a
conversion. However, Blackwood could have clinched the win late on but Jeremy
Roberts, who got all of his team's points through a try and three penalties,
failed with his last attempt.
Newbridge look to have secured a top three
finish thanks to a 32-16 home triumph over rivals Gilfach Goch.
The hosts were trailing at the
break but came out firing in the second half, adding to Dan Phillips’ try
through Geraint Weaver, Geraint Langdon and Rhys Price, while Neil Burnett
slotted three conversions and two penalties.
Gil started well but faded
badly after the break, although second row Damien Adams’ touchdown is one that
he will be telling the grandchildren about after picking off an interception
and outsprinting the cover defence to cross from 60 yards. Ian Davies landed three
penalties and a conversion.
Meanwhile in the battle at the
bottom, Mountain Ash got the better of rivals Glamorgan Wanderers with a narrow
22-20 success at Parc Duffryn Pennar.
The scores were tied 12-12 at
the break and the Old Firm needed a Marcus Clyne penalty four minutes from time
to seal victory.
Elsewhere, Beddau picked up
their eleventh win with a 32-26 triumph at Merthyr.
