Penallta moved top of Division Two East with a 22-3 victory over Llantwit Fadre at Central Park last night.
However, the win was far from straight forward as the Pitmen toiled through the first half and were lucky to go in half time all square at 3-3 after the hosts failed to capitalise on their territory, possession and dominance in the scrums.
After the break, it was a different story as Fadre became frustrated, and having failed to turn pressure into points, the highfliers pounced running in three tries through wing Gareth Edwards, scrum half Chris Thomas and second row Marc Jones, while hooker Jonny Wright added the extras to two.
The win sees them leapfrog Ystrad Rhondda at the summit with the Pitmen a solitary point ahead, though their rivals have a game in hand. With both teams on opposite sides of the Swalec Plate draw, however, a Cup final showdown at the Millennium Stadium is also still very much on the cards.
