Wales claim victory over Irish

Wales Under 18 Boys team have won the Cardigan Cup by beating Ireland 11-9, with Vale of Glamorgan's Tim Harry and Wrexham's Tom Williams both unbeaten.

Cradoc's Charlie Spencer-White, who flew over from America specially to play for his country, made the lengthy journey worthwhile as he won two out of his three matches in the event played in Rosslare in Ireland.

Over two days of competition consisting of two rounds of singles and one foursomes at Rosslare Golf Club the Welsh team won two out of the three sessions under Wales national coach Neil Matthews and team manager Dan Farmer. The final score was Wales 11, Ireland 9.

“This is an impressive result from the Under 18 Boys team, beating Ireland on their home course is never easy to do, so they certainly deserve congratulations,” said Golf Union of Wales director of performance Ben Waterhouse.

“Coming so soon after the Wales Ladies team finished third in the European Nations Cup, with Wrexham's Chloe Williams finishing second individually, it shows a really strong start to the season for the Wales teams.
“Hopefully this will be a performance they can all build on, it was particularly pleasing that every player contributed at least a point to the overall score.

“Particular congratulations go to Tim and Tom for remaining unbeaten through their three matches, while Charlie's outstanding commitment in flying back for the match was also rewarded as he contributed two winning points to the cause.

“Things were in danger of slipping away from us in the first session of singles, but Alex Matthews from Cardiff and Rhys Jones from Mountain Ash won the last two matches by a single hole each to keep us in touch.
“The team then fought back superbly over the final two sessions, the foursomes and the second singles, to claim victory.”

The Welsh team included Jake Darlington (Celtic Manor), Jack Davidson (Llanwern), Tim Harry (Vale Resort), Rhys Jones (Mountain Ash), Otto Mand (Greenmeadow), Alex Matthews (Cardiff), Charlie Spencer-White (Cradoc) and Tom Williams (Wrexham).
