In a brutal top of the table clash, RGC-1404 opened
up a seven point gap at the summit of One East after the leaders claimed a
captivating, 19-18 victory over title rivals Ystrad Rhondda at Parc Eiras.
RGC’s
centre Mike Jones got the hosts off to the best possible start, crossing for a
brace inside the opening half hour, with Rhodri Carlton-Jones adding the extras
to both to lead 14-0.
But
Ystrad, who are still in the hunt for silverware on several fronts, showed
their calibre and fought back strongly, with Dai Gratton crossing before the
break. The visitors carried on where they left off after the interval, with
Liam Davies touching down and fly half Rhys Truelove kicking eight points to
take the lead.
However,
disaster struck for the visitors when RGC’s Andrew Williams charged down,
kicked ahead and re-gathered to cross out-wide, as the hosts then held on for a
deserved win.
The
North Walians now look favourites to secure the title and gain promotion into
the Championship, but face a tough match on Saturday when they travel to
Penallta, who moved up to third with a 36-20 bonus point win at Mountain Ash.
The
Pitmen crossed five times through Marc Jones, Gary Williams, Andrew Jenkins,
Jonny Wright and Andrew John.
Meanwhile,
Heol y Cyw ran in 11 tries as they piled another 81 points on Tredegar’s torrid
season, with the hosts only posting 17 in reply. Chris Howe and Aled Jones both
scored hat-tricks, with Luke O’Driscoll, Paul Songhurst, Scott Hancock, Stewart
Leyshon and Gareth Howells also grabbing tries, Howells also converting eight
of them.
Elsewhere,
Ynysybwl beat Treorchy 27-8 at The Recreation Ground to move level on 42 points
with them in the table. Dione MacIntosh, Nathan Ellis, Joel Raikes and Dale Stuckey all scored tries for the hosts, with Ellis also
converting two and kicking a penalty.
Finally, Gilfach Goch beat Rhydyfelin 25-22 in a tight
affair at Welfare Park, while Merthyr had to postpone their game against Rumney
as they couldn’t field a side.
