Swalec Plate Semi-Final Predictions

The first semi-final is an all one East clash that sees title contenders Ystrad Rhondda meet fifth placed Rhydyfelin at Taffs Well. Ystrad have only lost twice this season in the league: last weekend in their narrow loss to RGC 1404, and the second week of the season to Rhydyfelin.

But club secretary Alan Sinclair was in confident mood ahead of the match, “We will be looking to even things up when we meet Rhydyfelin. Obviously they beat us at the start of the season but hopefully we can rectify that tomorrow.
We should really have beaten RGC last week but missed a few crucial kicks, but we go into this match full of confidence and we should be at full strength for the tie.”
Ystrad, who were promoted last season as Champions of Two East, are still fighting for silverware on several fronts as they remain in the hunt for the league, Silver Ball and Mid District titles, “The games are coming thick and fast but we are taking them one match at a time, and obviously, our priority at the moment is getting through to the Plate final,” added Sinclair.
But Ystrad, who were many people’s favourites for the title last season before losing out at this stage to Nant Conwy, will know that they will have to be at their best if they are to avoid a repeat.
Rhydyfelin meanwhile will look to bounce back from their narrow loss at Gilfach Goch last week, but will be buoyed by knowing they are only one of a handful of sides to defeat their opponents this season.
Verdict - Ystrad Rhondda by 6 points.
The other semi-final sees a West v East showdown with Cwmllynfell hoping to fly the flag for One West come May 4thwhile Heol y Cyw will be hoping to make it an all one East affair.
The Cockerels haven’t made much impact in One East but have secured Division One status again for next season, and on the road to the last four, they dumped out defending champions Penallta.
The Blues on the other hand have accounted for fellow One West side Kidwelly and Two West leaders Builth Wells, and, like Ystrad, are still in the running in a number of competitions including a final date against Llandovery in the Brains SA Cup.
It is always difficult to decide which league, East or West, is stronger, but one thing I am sure of is that all 30 men on the pitch tomorrow will be giving their all for the badge on their chest, and that's why I love club rugby.
Verdict - Cwmllynfell by 7 points.
