Steelmen burning up Championship after two wins on the spin

EBBW Vale seem to have carried on where they left off last season having taken the Championship by storm in their opening two matches.

The One East champions last term have maximum points after the second week of fixtures, following up a 76-13 trouncing of Glamorgan Wanderers with yesterday’s 45-16 whipping of Narberth.

Six different players – Dan Haymond, Polu Uhi, Josh Lewis, Ashley Sweet, Cameron Reagan and Jamie Jones – got on the scoresheet with tries.

Haymond also kicked five conversions and a penalty to put the icing on the cake while Will Lewis and Wayne Williams scored consolations for Narberth.

Two more sides, Newbridge and Bargoed, are level-pegging with Ebbw Vale at the top of the table.

Newbridge piled more misery on the Wanderers with a 57-14 success. Trevor James and Craig Hill both scored two tries while Neil Burnett, Ryan Lee, John Morris and Tom Edwards got the rest.

There was a bonus-point win for Bargoed at Beddau with James Pizey, Gareth Dare, Simon Parry and Lewis Protheroe all crossing. Josh Prosser added three conversions and two penalties in a 32-20 win.

Nearly 80 points were scored in the Welsh capital as Cardiff Met beat Bonymaen 49-28, the Swansea outfit just missing out on a bonus point after bagging three tries.

Ollie Edwards, Tom Hall, Jake Henry (2), Pierre Tucker and Nick Hodgson made sure of the result for Cardiff Met and Mark Cooke’s kicking proved crucial – he slotted five conversions and three penalties for a personal haul of 19 points.

Llanharan shut out Blackwood for the entire second-half at Glan-yr-Afon Park with the visitors building on a 20-16 half-time lead to take it 27-16. Nathan Huish was on target twice for the Dairymen while Josh Austin and Justin Benfield also crossed.

After an agonisingly close defeat to Bonymaen last weekend, Bridgend Athletic bounced back to beat Whitland 23-16 in West Wales courtesy of two tries from Mike Hathaway and one from Steve Lewis.

Finally, it could be a long, hard struggle for Pontypool this season as they lost for the second time, on this occasion 41-20 to Tata Steel in Margam.

They were in the game at the break as they trailed 10-6 but Tata ran away with it after the restart, their tries coming through Gbemi Fisher, Gareth John, Richard Randell and Ben Davies with two.
