THE supporters at the Arms Park yesterday would have done well to keep up with proceedings given the rate at which Cardiff were putting points past a hapless Newport side.
In the end they ran in nine tries, winning 62-17 for their first victory of the season against a team who have now conceded 108 points in their last two games.
Newport had the excuse of losing players to the sin bin during their 46-6 drubbing by Llanelli but there were no yellow or red cards this time, though Cardiff did get to use a few Blues players for the day.
The rout started as early as the second minute when winger and captain Shaun Powell got through the visitors’ drift defence to touch down. Scrum-half Rob Lewis, full-back Dan Fish, lock James Murphy and centre Richard Smith all crossed before the interval as the scoreboard operator struggled to keep up.
Down 36-3 at the break and with the game virtually over already, Newport sub Will Hodnet scored a fine solo try before things got back to normal.
Lewis pounced for his second try then No 8 Rob Copeland got one before flanker McCauley Cooke dotted down for two more. Fly-half Gareth Davies kicked seven conversions and a penalty and despite being totally outclassed, Newport kept fighting and were rewarded when wing Elliott Frewen got a breakaway try.
At the top of the table, Llandovery kept up their lighting start to the new campaign and registered a third consecutive bonus-point success, this time at home against Bridgend.
They scored five tries in all through Shaun Miles, Chris Knight, Lee Rees, Tom Ball and Rhodri Williams while Bridgend got two consolation scores with Lloyd Peers and Jamie Murphy both touching down.
There was a second win of the new term for Bedwas as they beat Swansea 34-17 at Bridge Field thanks to two tries each for Matthew John and Ross Wardle.
Bedwas had won the same fixture last season by just one point but yesterday it was far more comfortable for the hosts as Richard Powell converted all four tries and slotted two penalties.
Prop Roy Jones and second row Rhodri Hughes grabbed Swansea’s tries but it’s back to the drawing board ahead of Wednesday night’s home clash with Cross Keys.
Speaking of Cross Keys, they piled more misery on Aberavon with a 37-11 win over the Wizards at Pandy Park. Replacement Ben Thomas ran in a consolation try for the Wizards late on but by then the damage had been done.
Luke Ford (2), Dan Hodge, Adam Powell and Aled James crossed for Keys with Dean Gunter and Dorian Jones adding the extras.

And down West at Carmarthen Park, Pontypridd kept their unbeaten record intact with a first win at the Quins in the semi-professional era, going back to Sardis Road with a 24-16 triumph.
It wasn’t sealed until the very end when Cory Hill touched down after Pontypridd had staved off a stirring Carmarthen fightback in the second-half.

But in front of a crowd of around 1,000 and the Quins getting at least a losing bonus point, Hill raced away to rubber stamp Pontypridd’s win.
