Caernarfon kick off defence with draw


Caernarfon kicked off the defence of their Division One North title with a hardfought 12-12 draw at Pwllheli.
All of Caernarfon’s points came from the boot of outside half Kelvin Morris, who fired home four penalties.Pwllheli touched down twice either side of half time through Huw Williams and Alwyn Trenholm, with John Pugh adding the extras to the former.
Newcomers Dolgellau started life in the higher division with a solid 24-16 win at Llangefni.
The visitors outscored their rivals by three tries to one through Iwan Williams, Thomas Roberts and Cedri Williams, with Roberts adding the extras to all three and a penalty.
Llangefni’s solitary try came through Mark Gray, while Carwyn Milburn struck the conversion and three penalties.
Nant Conwy, who finished runners up last season, failed to set the division alight with their opening encounter, losing out 11-8 at Bro Ffestiniog.
In a scrappy match, the referee dished out one red card and four yellows. Both teams' tries came before the break with Elvin Jones touching down for Bro, and Robin Davies getting on the scoresheet for Nant. Barry Roberts also added a penalty for the hosts as they took an 8-5 lead into the interval.
After the break, Evan Jones brought the match level with a well-struck penalty, but Huw James restored Bro’s lead and clinched the victory with one of his own.
Elsewhere, Ruthin helped themselves to six tries in their 46-14 victory over Mold, and Bala edged out Bethesda 16-12.
