Wootton claims trophy success but misses record

DAVID Wootton had the course record at Swansea Bay in his sights during the Silver King Ball Trophy only to squander his chance near the end of his round.

With 41 points, Wootton did win the event from four-handicapper Richie Evans but he was left thinking what might have been having charged to -5 after 14 holes.

However, three dropped shots on the last few greens meant the three-handicapper just missed out on the record. Rikki Allen was third with 38 points.

Aled and Jane Thomas teamed up to win the D C Morgan Cup at Carmarthen, with a net score of 64.8. Ann and Ray Heath were second and Gwenallt Jones and Anne Williams were third.

Langland Bay is hosting its open week with a number of tournaments taking place. Jerry Steele and Dave Gibson of the home club showed the rest of the teams in the Seniors’ Fourball Betterball a clean pair of heels.

The duo registered 44 points to win by one from Tudor Weatherly & Alan Thomas. Meanwhile, Mary Hughes and Judith Roberts were just pushed into second place by Gill Lennox and Jo Bond in the Ladies’ Australian Spoons.

Fredrick Holland claimed the Junior Stableford Boys competition at Ashburnham with a three-point margin of victory over Tomos Davies and Elis Staines while Jean Peace took the Broomhill Cup with a net 71.

It was close in the Harry Cass Cup but in the end Lynette Bassett and Jordan Williams’s 48 points were one better than Huw Dixon and Fiona Halpin.

The fourth round of the Seniors’ Dawn Patrol at Derllys Court went the way of Frank Simons, but only by the finest of margins from three of the Joneses – Handel, Peter and Phillip.

Thirteen-handicap Simons edged it with 40 points to secure 10 league points while the other three all carded 39 to seal nine league points.
