TONY Fairlamb led home a field of more than 60 golfers to
win the Centenary Challenge qualifier at Carmarthen, an event held in aid of charity
Help for Heroes.
Fairlamb and Aled Thomas both carded net rounds of 67, but
the former had the edge on back-nine countback while Chris Reynolds was the
best of four players on 69 to take third.
Ian Marks, Paul Davies and Ray Harley were the unlucky ones
to miss out but the top 10 finishers now go through to a shoot-out in early
July where the winner will be the last man standing.
Meanwhile, a huge entry of over 170 took to the West Wales
course for the Members and Guests Day four-ball better-ball stableford with competition
across three sections – Men’s, Ladies’ and mixed.
Jean Barratt and Chris Robinson won the Ladies’ event with
34 points, Carole Fleetwood and Colin Randall triumphed in the mixed with 36
points and Ray Heath and Peter Wilson took the honours in the Men’s draw.
Their total of 42 points was just one clear of David Thomas
and Tim Jones, who in turn needed countback to see off Ryan Skinner and Nigel
Skinner. Ken Gealy and William McAlpine took fourth with 40 points. The longest
drive went to Gwenallt Jones and Alex James won nearest the pin.
Two Carmarthen women were among the prizes in the WWLGA Championships
and Presidents’ Cup at Glynhir recently. Anne Jones did extremely well to win
the 18-hole competition after a net round of 69 and Shan Lewis was runner-up over
27 holes, one shot behind Becky Harries of Haverfordwest.
Cloudy but calm conditions gave the 87 competitors in the
Nick Ellis Trophy at Southerndown the perfect opportunity to produce some good
scores. And they certainly didn’t disappoint, with Andy Allman narrowly beating
Wayne Thomas on countback after both recorded a net 63.
There were more close finishes at Ashburnham where Aled
Greville held off Garry Williams to lift the Cavalier Cup and Susan Collard
took first place in the Etta Williams Bogey.
The overall one-two-three in the June Medal at The Grove
came from division two as Allan Churchill’s net 69 was one better than Norman
Rand. Ken Bale (71) and Glyndwr Davies (87) came out on top in divisions one
and three respectively.
It was a close run thing at Derllys Court as the Seniors’
Texas Scramble went to the wire. The triumvirate of Les Burgoyne, Phil Jones
and Handel Jones saw off the challenge of Delme Williams, Peter Jones and Len
Thomas to win.
