Winter competition hotting up at Monmouth

MONMOUTH’S Winter League comes to a climax next month and teams are busy jostling for the places left in the competition’s knockout phase.

The players have until February 19 to finish all their league games across the four divisions with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final following on each of the next three Sundays.

In league one, Jack Spary and Nigel Morris are in pole position alongside Gary Walters and Paul Trueman on 16 points from seven and six games respectively.

Walters and Trueman are the only duo not to have lost this season while Stan Wynne and Bill Pimble are the only team without a win.

For the best record of any pair in the Winter League you have to look at the top of the second division where Steve Roach and Rich Meredith have won all seven of their fixtures for a total of 21 points.

They are assured of a place in the last eight but could be pipped for top spot by Mike Price and Brad Hudson who are three points adrift with one loss in seven outings.

Like Wynne and Pimble, Martin Newell and Neil Pask are yet to taste victory and have a single point to their names at the foot of the table.

Joe Griffiths and Sam Meredith hold an unassailable lead in league three with five wins and a half from seven matches. John Head and Josh Davies are aiming to cement the runners-up spot with one match left.

In division four, Rich Price and Victor Fisk look good for a last eight berth although second-placed Wynn Hughes and Mike Ingram have a game in hand which, if they win, will move them to within a point of the leaders.
