The only match to survive the freezing weather in Division One East was the encounter between Rumney and Merthyr, with Rumney coming out on top 24-14 against the visitors.
The Ironmen looked to have the beating of their hosts and took an early 9-6 lead through three Lloyd Haynes penalties, but a moment of madness five minutes before the interval saw winger Daniel Butler sent for an early shower for a headbutt directly in front of the referee.
Rumney emerged from the break galvanised in the knowledge that they had a numerical advantage, with outside half Danny Clarke adding a further two penalties to his first half efforts.
With the numerical advantage, it was only a matter of time before Rumney capitalised, although some resilient Merthyr defending resisted the onslaught till the dying minutes when both wing Gareth Stoppani and full back Luke Deere danced their way over the whitewash.
Merthyr showed some great spirit in the second half but with a man disadvantage, it was always going to be uphill work, though they did manage a consolation try through second row Phil Rees.
