Newport’s former British Amateur champion Paul Mayo fired five birdies in a round of 73 to win the South Wales PGA event at Ashburnham on Monday.
Mayo’s one over par was two better than Richard Brookman, the Creigiau man carding 75 to finish as runner-up for the second time in three tournaments.
In coming first, Mayo joins James Lee and Sion Bebb as winners of South Wales PGA competitions this season with the next event set for Tenby on February 20, when the organisation will also hold its AGM.
Organisers will be hoping for a better turnout there after a number of withdrawals at Ashburnham saw only first and second places being awarded prizes.
Despite that, Ashburnham club manager Huw Morgan was thrilled that his club could host one of the PGA’s events. “We are delighted to be playing our part in this revival,” he said.
“It’s great to see the professionals from different clubs in Wales getting together and playing quality courses.”
