TWO-THIRDS of this year’s Winter League at Carmarthen is now complete and with a substantial lead Eirwyn Roberts is the man to catch over the remaining two rounds.
He has accumulated 44 points so far and is currently 10 ahead of nearest rival Paul Davies with Berian Jones in third place on 29, one ahead of Jeff Harries.
Ian Elias and Martin Augur currently share fifth place, both tied on 25 points, but frontrunner Roberts cannot rest on his laurels just yet as there are 15 points up for grabs for the winner of each round.
In the Ladies’ section of the Winter League things are a lot closer. Currently tied at the top on 36 points are Jean Barratt and Elin Jones.
One of the club’s fast-improving junior members, Lowri Thomas, is lying third with 28 points and could still spring a surprise on the leaders.
Carmarthen’s three-clubs-and-a-putter competition showed that you don’t necessarily need a full set of equipment to still play good golf. All it takes is a bit of imagination allied to a sound technique.
In fact, there was some remarkable scoring with Darren Gostling emerging victorious with a terrific total of 42 points.
Chris Jones was runner-up just one point behind while he needed countback on the back nine to beat Wynne Thomas for second. Tim Harries was fourth on 40 points.
In difficult conditions at Swansea Bay, 16-handicapper Reg Beer led the way with 39 points to claim the Thursday Stableford.
He finished four ahead of Idris James before heavy and rain and snow resulted in the cancellation of the club’s weekend competitions.
The bad weather also accounted for the Team Bowmaker at Derllys Court. That event will not be rearranged but on February 20 the club’s Winter Eclectic gets under way again with the fourth round of six.
