Welsh Premier League loses players Down Under

Two Port Talbot stars are leaving Wales to pursue life in Australia after agreeing moves to Victorian State League Division 2 side Moreland City, with two Afan Lido players expected to follow.

Daniel Sheehan and Jake Parry (Port Talbot) and Daniel Thomas and Craig Jones (Afan Lido) are the players in question, with the announcement coming just a couple of weeks after Thomas and Jones made the switch between the neighbouring clubs.

Sheehan only made the switch from Afan Lido to Port Talbot last summer and had cemented his place at right-back in the team, making 20 appearances. Parry was a product of the youth team at the GenQuip Stadium, making four first team appearances.

Manager Scott Young admitted he was “disappointed” at their decision ahead of Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Bangor City. He said: “We knew that Sheehan was going and then Jake dropped a bombshell on me the other day which was a big set-back.

“They are young lads going across to the other side of the world for the opportunity of a better life, so we haven’t lost them to any of our rivals.

“Obviously we’re disappointed to be losing them but hopefully, if they ever do come back, they’ll want to play for Port Talbot Town and we’ll welcome them back with open arms.”

Thomas had just returned to the Marstons’ Stadium having spent six months at Port Talbot after joining in the summer, making 18 appearances and scoring twice. He had played twice for the club since his return.

Jones had also just switched back to Afan Lido having made just five substitute appearances for the Blues this year. He made one appearance off the bench for Lido before they announced on January 30 that he was leaving for Australia.

The club are yet to confirm Thomas’ leaving.
