Connah’s Quay withdraw points deduction appeal

Welsh Premier League side gap Connah’s Quay have withdrawn their appeal against a one-point deduction for fielding an ineligible player in a league game last month.

The deduction means that the club will drop in to the bottom half of the table, and compete in the Conference rather than the Championship for the second half of the season.

Carmarthen Town will take their place in the top half for the remainder of the season, with the punishment coming ironically for bringing on Lee Davey as a late substitute in their game against the Old Gold last month.

An official club statement read: “Following intensive, behind the scenes liaison involving the FAW, the Club management team, the gap Connah’s Quay Nomads committee, senior players and gap personnel, gap Connah’s Quay Nomads have decided to cancel their appeal against the one-point penalty issued by the FAW, for the alleged fielding of an ineligible player.

“The key reason for this decision was the length of time it would take to progress this appeal to an Independent Tribunal, and the impact this delay would have on the team, the league and their sponsors – in essence, it is for the good of Welsh football – not for the good of gap Connah’s Quay Nomads.

“The club look forward to fulfilling their fixtures and striving to attain seventh place to make the end of season play-offs.

“The club would like to specifically thank Gwyn Derfel for his role in this arbitration.”

The FAW had confirmed they had received an appeal for the club on Monday (February 11), and were in the process of setting up an independent committee to oversee the process.

An updated FAW statement said: "Gap Connah’s Quay has advised the FAW this afternoon (Wednesday, February 13) that the club is withdrawing its appeal against  the one-point deduction, fine and costs order imposed by the FAW disciplinary panel for fielding an ineligible player.

"This means that all scheduled Corbett Sports WPL [fixtures] will go ahead on the weekend of February 23 in addition to the four scheduled WPL games this weekend.

"Clubs are reminded of their responsibility to undertake stringent checks when registering players. The FAW ‘My Club’ portal doesn’t provide information on whether a player has participated in matches, as many leagues are either under Area Association control or under the jurisdiction of another National Association (ie The FA in England).

"[The] Corbett Sports Welsh Premier League welcomes the fact that this issue has been resolved amicably, and look forward to the completion of the WPL season as per the original timeframe."

Davey had already played for Colwyn Bay and Conwy Borough this term, with players only being allowed to play for two teams in one season.
