Huskies benefit from sported. financial boost

Barry Huskies Basketball Club is celebrating its junior section benefitting from a grant of more than £1,000 to improve the opportunities it provides for the town and the Vale of Glamorgan’s youngsters.

The grant of £1,637, provided by London 2012 sporting legacy charity sported., will be used for equipment and to provide both under-12s and girls’ only sessions.

The club have more than 40 members aged between eight and 18, and the children have benefitted from new basketballs and fitness equipment, and coaches also now have access to storage equipment at their local leisure centre in Holm View.

Adrian Whitlow, senior player and junior coach, said: “[The money has gone towards] purchasing necessary equipment, including specific skill basketballs for the younger members.

“Apart from providing training and competitive matches, we are also looking to give the children valuable skills necessary for later life, and encourage them to take on the roles of refereeing, scoring and admin work.

"The older players are also helping out coach the younger members of the club and act as excellent role models both in the club and the wider community.”

Richard Thomas, Wales manager for sported., commented: “Barry Huskies is run by a dedicated team of volunteers, parents and community representatives. The club provides an important intervention in a deprived area of Barry, and does a great job in supporting young people in the area.

“The new equipment and support provided through sported. funding will enable the club to continue to change more young lives through sport.”
