Colwyn Bay part company with manager Williams

Blue Square Bet North Division side Colwyn Bay have announced that they have parted company with manager Lee Williams by “mutual agreement”.

The search now begins for a new manager, with chairman Bob Paton set to take over first team affairs in the meantime, with a vital relegation scrap with Bishops Stortford at the Red Lion Foods Stadium tomorrow (February 9).

Mr Paton said in an official statement: “I’ve had a few meetings with Lee in the last couple of days over the current situation. In the end, we agreed it was in the best interests of Colwyn Bay Football Club that he steps down as manager.”

A club spokesman said that enquiries had already been made regarding the newly vacant post, and the club now needed to start searching through them for suitable candidates.

Williams (44) only replaced sacked player-manager Jon Newby at the beginning of January, and the former Seagulls goalkeeper will undoubtedly be disappointed he wasn’t given more time to stop the Colwyn Bay rot in the league.

They lost four league games with Williams in charge, scoring once and conceding 10 goals in the process. His final game was a 6-1 home defeat in a mid-week friendly against Welsh Premier League side Prestatyn Town.

With 17 fixtures remaining this season, they sit third from bottom in the relegation zone. They are six points off Histon above them, and safety, but have three games in hand.

Bishop’s Stortford are also six points clear of them in the table, so a win would be much-welcomed by the Conwy-based club.
