Welsh foursome climb leaderboard in Spain

WALES enjoyed a better second day at the European Nations Cup in Spain and now have England in their sights going into the third round.

The Welsh quartet moved up two places to 14th on the leaderboard yesterday with James Frazer (71), Jason Shufflebotham (74) and David Boote (78) contributing the three best scores out of the four.

Joe Vickery hit a second successive 80 at Sotogrande which meant his round was dropped from the combined total, now standing at 459 and a full 25 shots behind runaway leaders Ireland.

Reigning champions England are just three strokes ahead of Wales while Finland stay bottom of the 17 countries taking part.

In the individual competition, Irishman Reeve Whitson continues to head the field. He is one shot clear of fellow countryman Dermot McElroy and Spaniard Jon Rahm Rodriguez.

As for the four Welshmen, Pennard’s Frazer is tied for 29th on 151, Boote is tied for 38th on 154, Shufflebotham is a shot back and Vickery is one of five men on 160.

In the Ladies’ tournament, Denmark’s Nicole Broch Larsen leads the rest by a single shot while Germany are out in front in the team competition, four strokes better off than France.
