AFTER a European Nations Cup to forget, Joe Vickery's next big test will be the Duncan Putter at Southerndown in just over two weeks’ time.
The draw for rounds one and two sees Vickery paired with Neath’s Richard Hooper as the Newport man looks to improve on last year’s seventh place.
St Pierre duo Richard Bentham and Oliver Mottram start their campaigns alongside Somerset’s Fin Bullough and Joshua White of Surrey respectively while Greenmeadow youngster Otto Mand has Cheshire’s Josh Evans for company for the opening 36 holes.
Pennard’s James Frazer is the defending champion of an event that is all the more important this year with Welsh players hoping to catch the eye before October’s world amateur team championship, the Eisenhower Trophy.
It always looked on the cards, but John Davies and Leon Hillman were crowned division one champions in Tredegar & Rhymney’s Cock of the North last weekend.
They clinched top spot with a victory over closest rivals Mark Davies and Gwyn Board to set-up a champions’ play-off final against second division kings Mike Shepherd and Glenn Trigg.
Davies and Hillman reached the magical 26-point mark with the win while Shepherd and Trigg slipped to fourth.
They were overtaken by Gareth Owen and Sean Scannell, who had a bye, and Darren Sullivan and Mike Sutton, who beat bottom-of-the-table Tony Morgan and Gareth Harse.
The play-off winners will then go forward to take on the best from the other clubs in the region at the Gwent Cock of the North finals day while the Tredegar & Rhymney annual Cock of the North Away Day is to be held at Forest Hills in the Forest of Dean on May 12.
