Swalec Plate Quarter-final Predictions

Bethesda v Pontypool Utd
Bethesda crushed highflying Three South East’s Nelson in the last round, and the One North outfit have been strong at home this season. United, however, will take a lot of confidence out of dispatching Two West’s Skewen last time out and will be well prepared for this match.

Cwmllynfell v Ystrad Rhondda
This is undoubtedly going to be a very tight contest. Both sides narrowly won out in the last round with Cwm putting out last season’s runners up Glynneath, and they will surely be very tough to beat at home. The Two East leaders struggled last time they ventured West, edging out Two West strugglers Crymych 12-10, but the fine dry weather could help unleash Ystrad’s quick back line.

Nant Conwy v Builth Wells
Another intriguing encounter. Nant Conwy will want to put the disappointment of losing out on the One North title to Caernarfon behind them and what better way to do that than make it through to the semi-finals of the Plate? Builth are a big powerful pack and have proved they can produce the goods away from home this season with victory at Glynneath.
Verdict-Builth Wells by 3 points
Penallta v Maesteg Quins
This is surely the pick of the round. Penallta comfortably ended Senghenydd’s two year unbeaten home record in the last round and now welcome another club on the rise in Maesteg Quins. Quins, who lost out to Senghenydd in the Swalec Bowl final last year, will have their eyes set firmly on the prize of another Millennium Stadium date and with a well organised defence, will try to stifle Penallta’s attacking style. An extremely close game to call - Quins are unbeaten this season but with home advantage, I see Penallta just stealing  it.
Verdict-Penallta by 2 points
