Rising Welsh Star spearheads Olympics return

A Wales international is to make history as part of the first British team to take part in an Olympics golf event for more than 100 years.

Wrexham's Chloe Williams (pictured below) is part of team GB for the Australian Youth Olympic Festival later this month, the first occasion to mark golf's return as an Olympic event after 113 years.

The sport will return to the Olympics in Rio in 2016 after last being played as part of the Games in 1900, with this event in Australia including 17 sports and being held at many of the venues used for the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
The 17-year-old Welsh Girls champion has forced her way into the senior Wales Ladies side and established herself as star of the future, something underlined by this international recognition.

“We would like to congratulate Chloe on her well-deserved selection for Great Britain,” said Golf Union of Wales director of performance Ben Waterhouse.

“She has risen quickly through the ranks of Welsh golf and will be a central member of our teams in the coming years, but this selection shows she is also earning wider attention.

“This is a great opportunity for her to compete once again with many of the best junior golfers in the world, plus it is very exciting to be involved in an event tied in with the Olympics.

“It is an example of how being part of the Olympics family is going to have a big impact on golf through all the levels in future years.

“Who knows, someone like Chloe could be back at the main Olympics one day competing at the highest level.”
The Youth Olympic Festival will have competitors from 30 countries taking part in 17 sports – around 1,700 athletes in all aged between 13 and 19.

It was at such an event four years ago that Taekwondo Olympics gold medallist Jade Jones first marked herself out as a star of the future by taking first place.

Williams was delighted about her exciting start to the New Year. “It was really unexpected, but I am over the moon to be chosen,” she said. “I am really looking forward to it.”
