Newport could face Swansea in SWALEC Cup

The draw for the SWALEC Cup second round drew up the mouth-watering proposition of Newport facing up to Swansea in round two if the Gwent side overcome Bonymaen.

Swansea have been struggling for any sort of form in the Principality Premiership this season, but they can again put aside the stresses and strains of league rugby to look forward to a plum tie at Rodney Parade if Newport progress.

If top Premiership side Bedwas can overcome Llandovery in their yet-to-be-played first round encounter, then they will travel to Carmarthen Quins.

Elsewhere, the winner of the all-Championship tie between Ebbw Vale and Newbridge will be rewarded with a trip to Cardiff RFC’s Arms Park stadium, where the hosts narrowly overcame a plucky Cardiff Met side in round one.

Tata Steel will play host to Pontypridd in another fixture seeing a Championship side trying to topple a Premiership opponent.

An all-Championship encounter will see the winner of Blackwood and Pontypool taking on Glamorgan Wanderers, with all three teams looking to put disappointing league campaigns aside in the hope of Cup glory.

SWALEC Cup second round draw in full:
Carmarthen Quins v Bedwas/Llandovery
Neath v Cross Keys
Blackwood/Pontypool v Glamorgan Wanderers
Whitland/Aberavon v Llanharan/Beddau
Bargoed v Bridgend Ravens
Newport/Bonymaen v Swansea
Tata Steel v Pontypridd
Cardiff v Ebbw Vale/Newbridge
