Scorpions put through the wringer

South Wales Scorpions may have had a break from match action last weekend but they were not given time off, as they were put through the wringer by strength and conditioning coach Dean Fouache on Saturday.
The Scorpions have a tough run of matches coming up with no break until the end of August.
They travel to Workington Town next Sunday before hosting Oldham at The Gnoll on Sunday 22nd July, and are also looking forward to the big Welsh derby against North Wales Crusaders in Neath on Sunday 5th August.
To compete in these and other games, they have to maintain their fitness, so last Saturday, Fouache took them out of the gym and playing fields of Glamorgan University and headed for Elite fitness in Fairwater, Cardiff.
Elite has a fantastic mixture of normal barbells and dumbbells, prowler push sleds, tyres to flip, a full size boxing ring and countless heavy punch bags.  This means there is a huge range of activities that can be trained under one roof.
Fouache said: “For those of you that have been closely following the Scorpions over the last few games, you will be well aware it has been a tough month both physically and mentally.
“With this in mind I decided that it would be a good idea to have a change of scenery and training emphasis last Saturday, purely as a one off.

“After a full warm up, the boys completed a metabolic resistance training session (circuits with weights) which emphasised their lower body.  They then moved on to five x two minute rounds of boxing on the heavy bags and finished up by being split into two teams for a competitive rowing challenge.

“The idea of this training session was to give the boys a complete change from the types of training they have been doing throughout the season. It got the lads out of the rugby specific environment for a day, and made them start to think about performing different exercises and movements.

“I hope the boys enjoyed the change and as a wise man once said ‘a change is as good as a rest!'"
South Wales Scorpions’ next game against Oldham Roughyeds is at The Gnoll in Neath on Sunday 22nd July, kick-off 3pm. For more information, please go to www.scorpionsrl.com.
