Fearn and Richards strike gold on special day

CARMARTHEN, one of the competition’s founder members in 1962, was given the honour of hosting the Rabbits League Open Day on its golden anniversary.

Home golfers Jake Fearn and Martin Richards won their individual categories with scores of 43 and 39 points respectively while also helping the Carmarthen team to the overall club prize.

Malcolm Walters of Priskilly Firest won the nearest the pin and Adrian Phillips of Glyn Abbey took the prize for the longest drive as 130 golfers from clubs across the region enjoyed the special occasion.

The Captain’s Day was a big success with a several tournaments giving a host of players the chance to compete for honours at Carmarthen.

The Medal, for players with a handicap of between scratch and 13, was won by Rhys Lindquist with a net score of 67, one stroke ahead of Huw Smith with Richard Hopkin a shot back in third.

Keith Elias claimed the Stableford, for those with handicaps of more than 13, with a solid 39 points. He finished just in front of Kevin Jones on 38 with Jason Evans a close third.

The Junior Captain’s Medal was won by Tom Hughes with a net round of 68. Scott Jones was four shots worse off in second and Kieran James claimed third with a 74.

Hughes also earned a podium finish in the Junior David Morgan Cup but this time he had to settle for third place, three behind winner Johnny Skinner with James Bryan second. Carmarthen member Alun Davies registered 40 points to take the Seniors Open Day Stableford.

There was a decent turnout of 64 entrants for the Midweek Yellow Box Medal at Southerndown which was played in warm but windy conditions. Mark Jennings won division one with an excellent net 68 while Mark Brown was the best in division two with a round of 70.

The weather gave competitors in the Dunraven Bowl White Box Medal a tough test and it was those with a low handicap who seemed to cope best with the elements. William Hughes posted an outstanding net 71 which no-one could match.

Countback gave Susan Collard the edge over Eleanor Roberts in a Medal event at Ashburnham after both had recorded net rounds of 81. Jean Peace was third with an 82.

Finally, Gill Lennox had an extra reason to celebrate her birthday at Langland Bay with a hole-in-one at the 16th.
