Carew in seventh heaven as they preserve record

IT was a magnificent seventh win of the season for Carew yesterday in division one of the Pembroke County League.

Their eight-wicket trouncing of Whitland kept Carew's unbeaten record going in a campaign which shows no signs of slowing down.

If they carry on producing the goods like they have been, there is a very strong chance the league title will be on its way to the club.

After 11 games, Carew are 30 points clear of second-placed Neyland and top the stats when it comes to bowling bonus points gained, fewest points conceded, wickets taken and wickets lost.

Matthew Phillips (5-17) and Rhys Davies (3-22) saw to it that Whitland weren’t going to spring a surprise yesterday as they were bowled out for 94.

Gareth Lewis top scored with 42 for Carew as they got the runs required for the loss of two wickets.

Actually, Carew’s lead at the top was cut by two points because Neyland, batting first, beat Lawrenny by 115 runs after their opponents were humbled for 49 – Patrick Hannon took a superb 7-37.

Llangwm climbed a couple of places in the table thanks to a five-wicket triumph at home to St Ishmaels. William Beresford’s unbeaten 70 and 43 from Steve Mills propelled Llangwm to 145-5 after the visitors had been dismissed for 144.

There was an edgy finish at Haverfordwest where the hosts and Narberth fought out a tense draw.

The home side batted first and were all out for 116, only Simon Holiday really troubled the bowlers with a half-century. Narberth were 17 runs shy of their target but nine wickets down when play ended.

Saundersfoot saw their fifth match of the season cancelled because of the weather. They would have been looking for maximum points at home to bottom club Cresselly.

Burton closed the gap on Llanrhian at the top of division two with a six-wicket success at Herbranston. Llanrhian’s match at Cresselly seconds was abandoned and the only other game to beat the weather was in Pembroke where the hosts beat Haverfordwest seconds by seven wickets.

Third division leaders Lamphey saw off Llechryd by three wickets and in the fourth division, Saundersfoot seconds are just one point behind St Clears at the summit.

Only two matches in divisions five and six went ahead so Lawrenny seconds and Stackpole seconds continue to lead in each.
