GREG Tickell is the new South Wales Boys Matchplay champion
thanks to a 4&2 victory over hot favourite Zack Galliford at Llandrindod
Wells.
In winning the trophy, Tickell, who is attached to
Hallamshire Golf Club in Sheffield, also denied Borth & Ynyslas ace
Galliford the strokeplay and matchplay double.
Galliford qualified for the matchplay tournament as the
number one seed having claimed the strokeplay crown on Tuesday while Tickell
only just made it into the top 16.
But that counted for nothing yesterday as Tickell first of
all overcame Southerndown’s John Luke Williams in the semi-finals 6&5
before going on to complete what was in the end a fairly comfortable win
against Galliford.
Earlier in the day, Galliford had beaten Rhys Jones of
Mountain Ash 2&1 to progress to the final. Tickell, who also claimed the
scalps of Joe du Feu and Max Davies on his way to victory, succeeds Morlais
Castle’s Jack Bush as the matchplay champion.
