Captain's Day proves huge success at Carmarthen

MORE than 100 golfers descended on Carmarthen Golf Club for the annual Captain’s Day, this year in honour of skipper David Thomas’s good cause of choice.

Despite torrential rain falling in the 24 hours leading up to it, the day got off to a bright start with the course having recovered to provide a real test for those players taking part.

And there was some great scoring in the 0-13 handicap section (Medal), with Rhys Lindquist taking the honours with a net 67. Huw Smith was just one shot back on 68 and three golfers, Richard Hopkin, Iwan Parry and Gwenallt Jones all scored 69. Hopkin took third with the best back nine.

In the 14-28 handicap section (Stableford), Keith Elias won first prize with 39 points, Kevin Jones was runner-up with 38 and Jason Evans was third with 37. There was another hole-in-one at the ninth, this time the honours going to John Dive.

Assisted by the proceeds from the evening charity auction, Thomas will now be able to donate a substantial cheque to his designated charity.

The Seniors’ Open Day attracted another good field and Alun Davies won the under-65 category with an excellent score of 40 points. Tim Harries was second on 38 and Graham Lang third with 37.

The over-65 section was won by R Jenkins (Aberystwyth) with 38 points, two ahead of both Gary Thomas and Jeff Harries on 36. Thomas secured second place with a better back nine. Bob Bateman won nearest the pin on the ninth and Jenkins won his second prize of the day with the longest drive.

Rain arrived again for the Ladies’ Open day, but this did not dampen the spirits of the competitors in the Texas Scramble thanks to sterling work by the greens staff to keep the surfaces playable throughout the afternoon.

Rhian Walters, Judith Stevens and Gwyneth Morgan from Derllys Court won with a net score of 65.2. Rebecca Robinson, Paula James and Vicki Thomas were runners-up on 67 and Shan Lewis, Ann Bateman and Jenny Wedge were third on 68. Jan Robinson of Cardigan won nearest the pin and Jen Lewis was nearest the line on the 18th.

At Asburnham, Olwen Davies and Sally Forrester teamed up to win the Alys M Jones Bogey Foursomes ahead of Lynette Bassett and Fiona Halpin. Leena Lodha and Yvonne Williams were third.

A two-round total of 138 saw Sally Forrester breeze home to claim the Gold and Silver Medals, winning by nine strokes from Catherine Jones after scores of 67 and 71. Nia Greville carded rounds of 73 and 75 to finish third.

Meanwhile, the Frank Maliphant Cup was won by Kevin Thomas with a net 66, Elliot Anderson was two adrift in second and Roger Bowen one further back in third.

Ian Thomas was a clear winner in the Anniversary Cup at The Grove, his net round of 63 putting him seven shots clear of Luke Evans with Brian Thornton third with a 71.
