Webster takes over at Maesteg

Struggling Division Two West outfit Maesteg RFC have recruited the services of the highly sought after Richard Webster as their head coach, effective immediately.

The former Wales flanker and British and Irish Lion will lead his first training session at The Old Parish only a week after departing his position as forwards coach at Premiership side Neath.

“We are very pleased to welcome someone with the pedigree of Richard to the club. He was appointed yesterday [Monday 14th] and we look forward to working with him on and off the field,” commented Press Officer Dennis Thomas. “Obviously we aren’t expecting miracles and know there is a lot of hard work needed, but hopefully he can make a big impact and it will show with the performances on the field.”

Webster, who has also had coaching spells at Swansea, Bridgend, Cardiff Blues and is the current Wales Under 20 coach, will hopefully give fresh impetus to this once great side that has lost all of its matches this season, and have struggled due to losing numerous players in the off season.

“We’ve managed to put out full teams with subs the past two weeks so that is definitely a step in the right direction and with Richard on board, hopefully we can attract a few more players and strengthen the team,” added Secretary Lee Wanklyn.

Everyone that has witnessed the demise of such a great club as Maesteg so far this campaign will be hoping that this is a new chapter in their revival.
