Steelmen swoop to summit with five try demolition

Defending Champions Ebbw Vale swooped to the top of Division One East for the first time this season with a 34-5 home demolition of Rumney.
The Steelmen took a 10-0 lead going into the break after Dorian Jones fired home a penalty and added the extras to Josh Powell’s touchdown, but the hosts were rampant in the second half, running in a further four tries with Charlie Simpson, Ashley Sweet, Dan Dearden and Nicky Coughlin all going over. Simpson also added two conversions.
The visitors on the other hand could only manage a second half Lee Bendon try.

Glamorgan Wanderers continue to struggle as they slumped to their eighth defeat, going down 30-16 at home to Mountain Ash.
The Old Firm helped themselves to three tries through Scott Davies, Dale Keeping and Josh Lewis, with the latter also notching up 15 points with the boot.
Wanderers, who took a slender lead into half time, were unable to push on after the interval and could only add a Joe Xiberras try to Andre Bradbury’s first half touchdown and two Gareth Cull penalties.
Gilfach Goch held off a second half fight-back from Newbridge, who started the day as leaders, to record a narrow 19-14 win at Welfare Park.
Goch made good use of the swirling wind and slope in the opening interval, notching up all of their points before the break through four Ian Davies penalties, as well as his conversion of Stephen Baker’s touchdown, to take a 19-8 half time lead.
In the second half however, it was the visitors who made good use of the conditions, adding to Bevan Howells’ first half penalty and Tom Edwards’ break away try, with two further penalties from Howells. Newbridge, however, lacked the clinical finishing that has been a stalwart of their campaign, as they struggled with dropped passes at critical moments. Goch’s defence meanwhile grew more resilient as the afternoon wore on to bag their seventh victory.
Treorchy convincingly defeated bottom side Tredegar 26-6 at the Oval.
The Zebras bagged a try bonus thanks to touchdowns from Andrew Marlin, Pter Hutchings, Gwyn Thorne and Clive John. Celyn Ashton added the extras to three.
New boys Tredegar continue to look out of their depth as they were restricted to two Chris Amber penalties as they are yet to record a victory.
Another of Saturday’s fixtures saw Merthyr notch up their fifth win of the season with a comfortable 34-15 victory at Beddau.
The Ironmen bagged a try bonus as Daniel Harris, Geraint Edmunds, Aaron Howard and Neil Burnett all crossed the whitewash. Burnett also landed three conversions and two penalties to bring his personal tally to 17 points.
The hosts meanwhile were restricted to a first half penalty from Mitchell Jenkins, with Polu Uhi and Rhys Watkins both touching down after the break.
Finally, highflying Bargoed picked up their eighth win with a 23-11 home success over Blackwood.
The hosts outscored their rivals two tries to one through Gareth Davies and Matthew Hurley who also converted both and landed three penalties to round off an outstanding individual performance.
