Leaders go for double over reigning champs

TOP of the pile Cambrian & Clydach will attempt to do the double over reigning Welsh League champions Bryntirion Athletic when the two meet in the Rhondda tomorrow.
Second-half goals from Dane Williams, Jamie Rewbury and Jason Bertorelli did for Bryntyrion in Bridgend last September and since then the title holders’ form has slumped, leaving them 11th in the division one table.
Cambrian & Clydach, however, have gone from strength to strength and remain unbeaten in the league to lead second-placed Cwmbran Celtic by three points but with five games in hand over their closest rivals.
Bryntirion go into the game on a bit of a downer after Abertillery Bluebirds knocked them out of the League Cup on penalties last Saturday. That said the Rhondda outfit were made to work hard by a third division side themselves before coming through 5-3 at Bridgend Street.
In fact, Cambrian & Clydach will now play Abertillery in the last four while UWIC face Taffs Well in the other semi.
At the other end of the table, Caerau (Ely) go in search of only their third success of the season in the league when they visit sixth-placed Bridgend Town tonight. The hosts could move up to third if they win and other results go their way.
Caerau were beaten 3-0 by Goytre United last time out and it’s hard to see them getting much from their trip to Bridgend, who have fixtures in hand over three of the clubs above them.
It’s second versus fifth in Cwmbran as Celtic entertain West End, one of three teams on 24 points. The visitors haven’t won in the league since the end of October, though their programme has been badly hit by postponements.
Elsewhere, Taffs Well will be keen to build on their League Cup form as they welcome Haverfordwest County to Rhiw Dda’r. The crowd will be in for a treat if the game is anything like the 90 minutes in west Wales in September. Taffs Well won 4-3 with Nathan White bagging a brace.
In the three remaining division one matches, AFC Porth host Pontardawe Town, Barry Town go to Aberaman Athletic and Goytre United visit Cwmaman Institute.
