Bala tie two key men down as they prepare for Europe

Defender Tony Davies and midfielder Kenny Lunt have put pen to paper on new contracts at Europa League newcomers Bala Town.

The news is welcome at the Lakesiders, who lost play-off hero John Irving earlier this week as he decided to pursue a new life playing professionally in New Zealand.

Former Crewe Alexandra and Hereford United star Lunt, 33, took a while to settle in North Wales after signing in the summer, before starring alongside captain Mark Jones in midfield as the club put together a remarkable 13-match winning streak after the mid-season split to secure their place in European competition next term.

Davies, 28, was also a new signing last season and cemented his place at the heart of the defence, making 36 appearances and contributing two goals.

Caton said of Lunt’s renewal: “Kenny has had an incredible second half of the season and is probably one of the top three midfielders in the league alongside Mark Jones. He took a while to settle into the Welsh Premier, but since the split he has been outstanding.”

The club were disappointed to lose Irving, but did not want to stand in his way of emigrating. Their longest serving player, he has signed an agreement that he will re-join the club on his return to the country and will not join another team in the UK or Ireland without their consent.
