Jones secures Aberconwy Trophy with excellent final day

A brilliant two rounds of 70 saw Radyr's former Welsh Amateur champion Alastair Jones capture the Aberconwy Trophy by three strokes on the final day at Maesdu.

Jones, also twice Welsh Open Youths champion, had hit a 73 and a 74 on day one over 36 holes at Conwy, and topped the final leaderboard with a 72-hole gross of 287, three strokes ahead of both Wrexham’s Alyn Torrence and Conwy’s own Lee Jones.

Oswestry’s Welsh international Will Jones was fourth, a further stroke behind Torrence and namesake Lee.

Stunning weekend weather meant golfing conditions were perfect as competitors took to the two courses, although many found play at Conwy on the Saturday challenging to card some high scores.

Lee Jones had been the overnight leader after producing rounds of 75 and 68 for a 36-hole gross of 143, but a 76 and a 71 saw him fall just short of namesake Alastair’s final card.

The Vale’s Ryan Thomas had been joint-second alongside the eventual winner after day one, and he looked in contention with a third round 71 before a final round 80 ended his chances of victory and saw him plummet to an eventual joint ninth finish alongside Torrence’s club-mate Gareth Evans.

Will Jones in fact carded the lowest gross at Maesdu with two magnificent 69s, but a 75 and a 78 at Conwy the day before was too much to claw back to challenge Alastair Jones for the trophy.
